Many people in recovery find that group exercise — running clubs, yoga classes, team sports — provides both the physical benefits of exercise and the social connection that is so important for recovery. Many people in recovery find that yoga's emphasis on present-moment awareness and non-judgment resonates with the spiritual principles of the 12-step program.

Exercise and Craving Management

Paradoxically, exercise is one of the most effective remedies for this fatigue — it increases energy levels over time, even when it feels like an effort to begin. Starting with very modest exercise — a 10-minute walk — and building gradually is the most effective approach.

Body image issues: Many people in recovery have complicated relationships with their bodies, and the prospect of exercising in public can feel intimidating. Home exercise, walking in quiet areas, or finding a supportive group environment can help address this barrier.

Time: The demands of early recovery — meetings, Step work, therapy, rebuilding relationships — can make it difficult to find time for exercise. But even 20 minutes of walking, five days a week, is sufficient to produce significant benefits. Exercise does not have to be a major time commitment to be effective.
